JASHN-E-DARPAN”  organized by the Department of Culture & Tourism- Government of Telangana, was a memorable and remarkable event in term of dedicating the event to the Legendary Urdu Afsana-Nigaar ISMAT CHUGHTAI. It was a two day celebration at the prestigious RAVINDRA BHARTI AUDITORIUM on 14th and 15th of March’2019.

A glimpse from Darpan's Chauthi Ka Joda by Ismat

On the first day of its celebration a dramatized  story “ CHAUTHI KA JODA” was presented, the story was written by #ISMAT CHUGHTAI but the dramatic form was created by NAYEEM JAVED sb. In a very delicate and emotional way, dialogues were written so sharply and the audience was completely sunk into the emotional scenes played by the three women character. #Upasna in the role of a single mother, #Devika and #Shubhangi as her daughters were at their full height of performance. #Riyaz was also successful to perform his part, it was a very emotional and successful play directed by #ALI AHMED, the young and energetic director who is trying to give some more colours to the theatre work.

Before the play starts there was  a fest for the eyes of the audience, a masterly woven fiction created by #SUHAS BHATNAGAR….  “CHUHALBAAZIYAAN” , It was a conversation between SAADAT HASSAN #MANTO and ISMAT CHUGHTAI in a very nostalgic way , the dialogues between each other were too interesting showing the bonds between them, in spite of being a fiction as claimed by the writer SUHAS BHATNAGAR; CHUHALBAAZIYAN was appreciated by the full house audience with their deepest core of heart.

Capt Ahmed & Seema Khan as Manto & Ismat

It was the end of the first day as the second day started with the second part of “CHUHAL BAAZIYA’N” and the audience experienced the same kind of pleasure and enjoyed again with full involvement. #Capt Ahmed who has achieved his mastery in performing SAADAT HASSAN MANTO played MANTO  while #SEEMA KHAN played ISMAT CHUGHTAI, I have seen #CAPT AHMED for quite a few times playing MANTO  and it can be said that he seems to carry the soul of MANTO within him.

After CHUAL BAAZIYA’N , started the most awaited controversial story “#LIHAAF”  dramatized and screen play by ALI AHMED.

The Nawab singing the Nazm "Zindagi Jab Bhi" couldn’t connect the audience to the basic concept. #Capt. SN Ahmed looked like a Nawab. Begam Jaan (act by #Sonali Elizabeth) looked elegant and Rabbo (act by #Juhi) matched the characters. Ismat, the young girl (act by #Shaurya) was impressive. They all together made an attempt to stage a play on the most controversial story by Ismat Chugtai. The story deals with the trends at present regardless of the time it was written, it was written in 1942.

Lihaaf on the stage...

The music part in the play had an adverse impact on the original act. Nawab enjoying the Qawwali didn’t match the story. In the story Nawab’s act had full impact. It was well observed that during the play, which was splendid over two weeks Ismat’s costume was same. It was an uphill task to stage this play, but it went well. Direction was super. The audience had Ismat (Shaurya) in their mind at the end. Her act was well appreciated. I wish Begam Jaan had few more dialogues.

#ALI AHMED directed all the plays very skillfully and deserves appreciation. #SUHAS BHATNAGAR is successful to portray the fiction version of the Manto-Ismat conversation. #NAYEEM JAVED has shown the power of his pen in the screen play of CHAUTHI KA JODA.

ALI AHMED is successful to present himself as a screen play writer.

#Capt SN AHMED as MANTO and  #SHAURYA as baby ISMAT stamped themselves on the mind of the viewers.

#SEEMA KHAN, #DEVIKA, #SONALI, #JUHI #REYAZ and all of them lost themselves and just became the character they were playing.

Music was nice but needed more attention. Lighting work could have been better.

Though such plays are very challenging to present on stage and such revolutionary and controversial plays invite a lot of criticism from the viewers and media but such plays are an eye opener and think-pad if drafted carefully.

Something about the reviewer: #JAWAID NASEEM is an Actor, Anchor, Poet, Writer, Moderator and a Narrator. He is well known for his hold on Urdu language & literature.
